Clarinet began studying 1960 under the direction of Nikolay. N. Kiryukhin. In 1964 entered the class of Professor Paul N. Sukhanov at the Leningrad Conservatory.

After the graduation began a post-graduate studium. In 1969-70 a scholarship student at the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Ulysses Delecluse.
1970, after returning from France, finished the post-graduate school.
In 1974, awarded first degree diploma at the Prague Spring International Competition.
While a student at the Conservatory, began his professional career at the Leningrad Chamber Orchestra, later with the opera and symphony orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre.
Premiered new works for clarinet by G. Banshchikov, G. Okunev, A. Aslamazov and others.
PhD in Art History.
Professor Alexander Stepanov is actively engaged in teaching. He taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.
Presently a teacher at the Music college and at the Higher Music School in Bratislava, and the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica.
Participated in international conferences and symposiums in Germany, Hungary and Austria.
